About Dr. Urbanic

Dr. James Urbanic is an Director and Vice-Chair of Academic Affairs. He is an Associate Director (Clinical Trials) in the Center of Precision Radiation Medicine (CPRM). He is also the Medical Director of our Encinitas Treatment Facility as well as the UC San Diego Program Director at the California Proton Center, an Affiliate of the UC San Diego Health Cancer Network.

A dedicated Clinical Trialist, Dr. Urbanic is a leader in multiple national Cooperative Groups including Alliance and NRG, having served as study chair and/or principal investigator on Lung Cancer and CNS tumor clinical trials. He is Co-Lead of the Lung Cancer Disease Team in the Moores Cancer Center. He has considerable experience in cutting-edge radiation technologies including intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and proton therapy and has clinics at our Encinitas Facility, the California Proton Center and the Moores Cancer Center where he participates in a multi-disciplinary lung cancer clinic. He has been recognized as a Best Doctor in America and selected as Teacher of the Year by the UC San Diego Radiation Oncology residents.

Dr. Urbanic is involved in numerous national organizations and societies. He is currently Senior Editor of the journal Practical Radiation Oncology and is a member of the National Comprehensive Care Network (NCCN) panel focused on smoking cessation. He also participates in the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise, an American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO)-sponsored initiative focusing on improving clinical functionality, and serves on the ASTRO Scientific Advisory Council.
