The UC San Diego Department of Radiation Medicine & Applied Sciences (RMAS) is a top national academic radiation oncology department. Initially named the Department of Radiation Oncology, the name RMAS was selected to highlight our dual focus on both clinical medicine and academics. With over 75 faculty members, RMAS is one of the largest radiation oncology departments in the country.
RMAS physicians see and treat patients at 8 treatment centers throughout the greater San Diego region, including at the affiliated California Proton Therapy Center. Over 500 patients are treated daily at our facilities with either external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) or brachytherapy. The department offers a wide range of novel therapies, ranging from adaptive radiotherapy (using the ETHOS platform) to intensity-modulated proton therapy.
The department is home to 2 residency programs, one in radiation oncology and another in medical physics. An integral part of the School of Medicine, the department hosts multiple clinical rotations and research opportunities for medical students, graduate and post-doctoral students. RMAS residency graduates currently work at prestigious academic universities and private hospitals throughout the Unites States and abroad.
RMAS researchers belong to 3 research centers: Center for Precision Radiation Medicine (CPRM), Center for Health Equity, Education and Research (CHEER) and the Center for Quality, Innovation, Value & Efficiency in Radiotherapy (QUIVER). Center members published over 180 publications in the 2024 academic year, many in prestigious cancer and specialty journals and had over $7.5M in total grant funding.
