Bongyong Song Ph.D.
Assistant Professor
About Dr. Song
Dr. Bongyong Song is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Applied Sciences within the Department of Radiation Medicine & Applied Sciences and a member of the RMAS Center for Precision Radiation Medicine. He currently serves as the Senior Director of Technology at Qualcomm Corporation.
He holds a unique position at the interface of engineering and clinical application. In 2016, he was recognized with a Galvanizing Engineering in Medicine (GEM) award—working alongside faculty from both UC San Diego Health Sciences and Engineering—to develop a compressed-sensing image acquisition method aimed at reducing clinical SPECT imaging time and improving patient experience.
Dr. Song’s scholarly output centers on medical imaging physics, particularly innovations in cone-beam CT (CBCT) reconstruction for image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT). Highlights include: 1) A low-complexity gradient projection method for total variation–based CBCT reconstructions, published in Physics in Medicine and Biology (2014), 2) Development of motion-map constrained image reconstruction (MCIR) for 4D CBCT, enabling improved internal target visualization during radiation delivery and 3) Contributions to novel HDR brachytherapy applicator designs for rectal cancer and studies on liver motion during SBRT, expanding the understanding of patient anatomy movement during therap
