About Dr. McDonald

Dr. Carrie McDonald is a Professor in the Department of Radiation Medicine and Applied Sciences, Division of Applied Sciences, and the Department of Psychiatry. She leads the Lab of Cognitive Imaging (LOCI) within the UCSD Center for Multimodal Imaging and Genetics and is a member of the RMAS Center for Precision Radiation Medicine.

Her clinical focus is on adults affected by neurological and psychiatric conditions—such as epilepsy, brain tumors, dementia, head injuries, and other disorders of aging. In the Lab of Cognitive Imaging, she investigates neuropsychological, and imaging biomarkers related to cognition, particularly language and memory—in patients with epilepsy and brain tumors. Her research employs advanced structural, diffusion, and functional neuroimaging to elucidate cognitive deficits in individuals with refractory epilepsy, aiming to predict postoperative outcomes and inform surgical decision-making. She also extends this work to Alzheimer’s disease, mild cognitive impairment, and highgrade gliomas—studying how advanced diffusion imaging can monitor brain tumor progression.
