About Dr. Choi
Dr. Dong Ju Choi is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Applied Sciences and is a Senior Computational Scientist at the San Diego Supercomputer Center.
As a foundational member of the SDSC scientific computing team, Dr. Choi plays a critical role in enabling high-performance and parallel computing solutions that support a broad spectrum of scientific and engineering challenges. His technical expertise spans several key areas fundamental to modern high-performance computing (HPC), including parallel software development and optimization, high-performance computing (HPC) software frameworks, data visualization and web-based programming and database design and finite element analysis.
One notable application of his skill set includes collaboration on GPU-accelerated seismic hazard simulations. Working alongside colleagues at SDSC and UCSD, Dr. Choi made significant contributions to a high-speed earthquake modeling project using GPU architectures. This work achieved petaflop-scale processing speeds and delivered remarkable acceleration—up to 110×—compared to traditional CPU-based codes, substantially enhancing rapid seismic hazard analysis capabilities
