About Dr. Califano
Dr. Joseph Califano is a Professor in the Departments of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery and Radiation Medicine & Applied Sciences. He serves as the Founding Director of the Hanna & Mark Gleiberman Head and Neck Cancer Center and is the Co-leader of the Structural and Functional Genomics Program in the Moores Cancer Center.
His clinical practice focuses on minimally invasive management of tumors affecting the oral cavity, salivary glands, pharynx, larynx, sinuses, and other head and neck structures. As Director of the Gleiberman Head & Neck Cancer Center, he leads a multidisciplinary team of physician-scientists dedicated to pioneering both innovative clinical trials and cutting-edge research, all aimed at advancing the understanding and treatment of head and neck cancers in a compassionate, patient-centered environment.
A surgeon–scientist, Dr. Califano leads a laboratory funded by the National Institutes of Health, investigating the molecular and biological drivers of head and neck cancers. He has authored well over 250 peer-reviewed articles, contributing to both clinical advances and basic scientific understanding of oncologic processes in his field. He serves on leadership and editorial committees including the NCI Head and Neck Steering Committee, the American Head and Neck Society, and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.
