Maya Abdou, M.D.
PGY-2 Resident
About Dr. Abdou
Maya was born and raised in Syria, where she began her undergraduate studies at Damascus University before making the first of several long-distance moves to Texas, ultimately earning her bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. She later completed her medical education at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine.
Maya discovered her interest in oncology early in medical school and began working in the radiation oncology department during her first year. She was immediately drawn to the field’s unique blend of technological precision, scientific innovation, and the opportunity to build long-term relationships with patients. Her research during medical school focused on rare soft tissue sarcomas, and she’s excited to expand her work into projects centered more on patient experience and quality of life during and after radiation treatment.
She chose UCSD for her training because of its strong research infrastructure, cutting-edge technology, and, most importantly, the inclusive culture that fosters collaboration. The San Diego weather was a welcome bonus after back-to-back stints in Texas and Minnesota.
Outside of work, Maya enjoys getting lost in a good novel, doing her best to keep houseplants alive, and experimenting in the kitchen. She’s always up for an adventure—whether that means trying an unfamiliar dish or jumping out of a plane.
