Prone Breast Board Used to Improve Treatment of Breast Cancer
UCSD Department of Radiation Oncology is pleased to announce an innovative treatment strategy to treat breast cancer while further limiting dose to the lung and heart.  Many women, especially those that are large breasted, are not candidates for breast conservation followed by radiation without treating a significant portion of normal tissue.  A “prone breast board” now available at UCSD eliminates this problem, increasing the availability of breast conservation to more women.  Manufactured by Bionix Inc., the breast board (see photo) consists of a foam-lined “pillow” that allows a woman to rest comfortably on her stomach, while the affected breast is allowed to fall away from the chest wall.  Studies have proven this method allows delivery of less lung and heart radiation dose, and improved radiation tolerance with better long-term cosmesis of the breast.

Press Release Highlights Trigeminal Neuralgia Patient
A recent Varian Medical System’s press release highlighted the successful stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) treatment of a UCSD patient with intractable trigeminal neuralgia using the Varian image-guided SRS Trilogy system.  The patient had suffered from persistent pain for 20 years despite multiple earlier treatments including GammaKnife SRS and balloon nerve compression.  Unlike GammaKnife, Trilogy is a frameless approach obviating the need to attach a rigid head frame to the patient’s skull. The treatment developed in this case focused the SRS beams on the trigeminal nerve while avoiding nearby critical structures including the brainstem (see photo).

Dr. Kevin Murphy (Radiation Oncology) and Dr. John Alksne (Neurosurgery) have the largest experience in the world of image-guided frameless SRS on the Trilogy machine.
