UCSD Patient and Faculty Featured in San Diego Union Tribune
An article in the April 19th issue of the San Diego Union Tribune featured a Moores Cancer Center Radiation Oncology patient who benefits from the American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery Transportation Program. This program consists of volunteer drivers, some of whom are themselves cancer patients or relatives of cancer patients, who help transport oncology patients to and from their treatments and other medical appointments. In this article entitled They’re Riding to Recuperation, one of our patients, Michael Wilson, was interviewed along with Dr. Ajay Sandhu, Medical Director and Chief of the Urological Cancer Service in our Department (see photo). Transportation is a major barrier to receiving radiation therapy, particularly among elderly. Such programs go along way to help patients receive the treatments they need. UCSD Faculty Named Principal Investigator of a National Uterine Cancer Study
Dr. Catheryn Yashar, Chief of the Gynecologic Oncology Service, has been named principal investigator for the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) on a national clinical trial focusing on the treatment of women with early stage endometrial cancer. Conducted jointly with the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG), this study will compare two adjuvant approaches in stage I-II patients: whole pelvic irradiation versus chemotherapy plus vaginal brachytherapy. All patients will undergo definitive surgery with pelvic lymph node assessment prior to randomization. This important trial will help define the optimal approach in the most common gynecologic cancer in the United States.
