Position Description
We are seeking applications for the Clinical Medical Physics Residency Program in Radiation Oncology at the University of California, San Diego. This 2-year training program is designed for candidates with masters or doctoral degrees in relevant physical sciences who are interested in careers as clinical medical physicists in radiation oncology. The program provides structured training and progress assessment in all aspects of clinical medical physics in radiation oncology, with direct supervision by the Medical Physics faculty. Training occurs in a large, state-of-the-art radiation oncology center, with additional exposure to a community based hospital. The curriculum provides comprehensive, mentored, hands-on experiences, and progressive responsibility providing the opportunity to work towards becoming fully independent by the time you complete the program.
Facility and Equipment
The successful applicant will join seven faculty physicists and two other Medical Physics residents, along with five dosimetrists, two IT specialists, and the Center for Advanced Radiotherapy Technologies, which is the research arm of the Department of Radiation Oncology. Our 15,000 sq ft department opened in 2005 and we opened a 15,000 sq ft expansion to our department in 2009 which combines state-of-the-art imaging and treatment delivery equipment: 4 Varian linear accelerators with gating and kilovoltage cone beam CT, 4D GE PET/CT scanner, optical image guidance, and an active and diverse brachytherapy program (HDR, prostate seed implants, eye plaque implants, etc.). Specialized equipment and/or features include the IMRT delivery, 4D imaging/treatment planning/ delivery, frame-based and frameless linac stereotactic radio-surgery/therapy, and image guidance provided by multiple technologies. As the Medical Physics Division is actively involved in translational research, collaboration opportunities for our residents with scientists in Bioengineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Radiology are plentiful. We have an active clinical program that treats all the routine types of cancers (such as breast, prostate, lung, brain, head and neck, GYN, and TBI) and we have an extremely active pediatric program that treats about 90 cases per year.
