Chairman's Welcome
I would like to personally welcome you to the website of the Department of Radiation Medicine and Applied Sciences at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). I am very proud to be a member of this exceptional Department which offers patients access to state-of-the-art therapies delivered in a compassionate, caring environment. The Department also has a strong commitment to education and research, particularly in the development and implementation of advanced radiation technologies. Our department is an integral member of the Rebecca and John Moores Cancer Center, one of only 41 NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the country and the only one in the San Diego region.
Our website offers patients and their families a comprehensive overview of our programs, services, faculty and staff. Interested in a particular disease or treatment program? Simply click on Patient Information and view the disease and treatment specific sections under the heading Treatment Approaches & Programs. For example, if you have prostate cancer, sections that might interest you are entitled Prostate Cancer (Genitourinary), Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT). However, make sure you look over the more general sections, for example the What is Radiation Therapy, History of Radiation Oncology, and Frequently Asked Questions. A particularly helpful section is entitled What to Expect which describes each aspect of the radiation treatment process from consultation, through simulation, treatment planning and delivery. It even includes suggested questions to ask you physician at the time of consultation.
Our website is also designed to provide an overview of the academic side of our Department including research programs and education. Under the section Faculty and Staff, you will find biographies of our faculty members complete with their clinical and research focuses and publications. The Research section provides a comprehensive overview of our research programs, notably the Center for Advanced Radiotherapy Technologies (CART), the technology research arm of the Department. Descriptions of our training programs in Radiation Oncology and Medical Physics are included under Education & Training.
I have also included below sections devoted to the University of California, UCSD and UCSD Medical Center, as well as to the Organizational and Leadership Structure and Missions and Values of our department.
Please also check out our What’s New section which provides an up-to-date overview of new developments and events related to the Department.
It is my sincere hope that you find our website helpful to you and your family.
Regards,
